Whipsaws 60 Watt Avenue "Alaska's undisputed bar-band champions follow up the fine country-drenched Ten Day Bender with and ode to rock 'n roll. Emphasize the rock. Sounding like later-day Uncle Tupelo, 60 Watt Ave's title track stomps out of the gate like a mustang. Evan Phillips' vocals range from sensitive to swagger; the music moans and rocks. The band calls their brand of music "Alaskan Rock 'n Roll" even if the rest of the world might say this crunchy, twangy guitars-fueled album sounds like it came right out of America's heartland. Those looking to fill that rock jones that frequently gets overlooked in Americana can stop right here. This albums sweats rock 'n roll... it's a cracker!" --Jeff Weiss, Miles of Music |

Without a Face You probably never imaged that the musicians from metal-juggernaut Mastodon - a band whove fashioned monstrous epics like Leviathan and Blood Mountain could have you dancing a wild, unbridled jig in a crowded saloon, your drink sloshing about carelessly in one hand while your belt flails and whirls overhead like a helicopter blade in the other. Believe me, thats only because you havent yet discovered Fiend Without A Face. A side project of Mastodons guitarist / vocalist Brent Hinds and drummer Brann Dailor, Fiend Without A Face are a bizarre and undeniably fun amalgam of the rockabilly and surf genres, producing a bastard lovechild that the bands founders have dubbed surfabilly (see, you take the surf from surf, and the billy from rockabilly and then well, never mind)." --Radu Catrina. (With the rise of Mastodon, copies of this rare album have sold between $35 and $50 in recent years.) |
![]() | Hayshaker Black Holiday in Mexico City In the tradition of the Knitters and Southern Culture on the Skids, Hayshaker blends their Waycross, GA swampland roots into an EP-sized album that runs the gambit of rock, country, punk and even tinges of southern metal. Male and female vocals dance eerily and playfully above the cry of pedal steel... and at times, the din of a Marshall stack. Like a bulldozer in a field of wildflowers, this powerhouse from the land of Gram has enough intelligent twang to satisfy any lover of quality Americana music - and enough pent up rage to satisfy any PBR-swillin' NASCAR fan south of the Mason-Dixon line. |

Mind Plastic Dreams "Rusty, Jonathan and Bryan have been working vehemently on this release in-between gigs for the last year... and the result is pure magic. This album may be the most eminent Shut Eye Records release to date... from the authoritative lead off track, 'It's Just Right' to the playful sing-song track 'Town' to the thoughtful, 'If the World Falls', this 10-song CD combines the acumen and panache of their first release Elementary School Talent Show and the experience and wisdom of their three year crusade, hitting the pavement and evangelizing the good word of Soundtrack Mind at smoke-filled, swill-painted clubs across the Southeastern US. Upbeat, well-written pop out of Athens, GA." --CDBaby.com |

Indicators Beauty is a Whore "Are they punk? Are they cowboys? Cowpunks? Roots rockers? Ahhh who the hell cares! All I know is that the Indicators take the rock and roll thing only half-serious and always with a shot of whatever it is they drink (whatever it is get me one too). And - to make it clear for those of you who arent discerning bar-rock aficionados - thats a good thing. I, for one, happen to be the foremost bar, um, er, rock aficianado (meaning: being the hard drinkin easy rockin type), so believe me on such subject matter these cats have the gig down pretty darn near impeccably. Hell, they only do spot on originals ("Moviegoer" a very real reality check, and the Nick Lowe paean "Regret" are simply great songs); well thought out covers (Roky Erickson, Willie Nelson, Bob Dylan at double speed!); and enough down and dirty roaring, groovin, and punkin that youd wish forever that they were your bars band. I know theyd be the only one Id pay to see." --bangSheet |

Mind Elementary School Talent Show On Elementary School Talent Show, the band's first full-length album, Soundtrack Mind presents a languid collection of tunes that deal with themes of hope and self-improvement. The adult-alternative/modern-rock band utilizes the traditional trio approach to present positive, up-tempo, keyboard-tinged pop songs. The easygoing trio moved to Athens in early '99 from the more blue-collar Macon scene. Their unpretentious presentation stands out as fairly unique in Athens' often arty and insular scene. |
